The San Juan Capistrano City Council (“City”) last night voted unanimously to approve the agreement that will transfer the City’s water, wastewater, and recycled water services to the Santa Margarita Water District (“SMWD” “District”).
“I would like to thank both the staff of the city of San Juan Capistrano and the District for their comprehensive and excellent work preparing this agreement,” said Betty Olson, Board President. “We look forward to welcoming San Juan Capistrano residents to SMWD in just a few months.”
The two agencies have worked collaboratively over the last several months to develop a detailed agreement that will now be considered and approved by the Orange County Local Agency Formation Commission (OC LAFCO).
On Friday, January 17, the SMWD Board of Directors unanimously approved the annexation agreement. The agreement details the District’s commitment to invest $25 million to improve and rehabilitate the water infrastructure in the city over the next decade, welcome 16 employees to SMWD, and increase regional water supply reliably projects.
Santa Margarita Water District will continue to work closely with the City, it’s residents and community groups, as well as the OC LAFCO Board over the next several months. The transfer is expected to be completed by the summer of 2020.
