Hi-Desert Water District (HDWD) was named Member of the Year by the Yucca Valley Chamber of Commerce for securing more than $26 million in state and federal funding for the area’s first municipal sewer system.
HDWD Board President Dan Munsey and directors Sarann Graham and Bob Stadum accepted the award June 27thduring a Chamber event at the Hawk’s Landing Golf Course in Yucca Valley.
“The entire Hi-Desert Water District team is honored to receive this recognition of our efforts to acquire grants and low-interest loans to help finance this much-needed project,” Munsey said. “We will continue to pursue funding for upcoming segments of the sewer system construction to keep costs as low as possible for the community.”
The first phase of the sewer system project began in January 2017 with construction of a wastewater treatment and reclamation facility, a collection system comprised of over 70 miles of pipeline and 5,000 private property connections. After pipelines were installed, contractors replaced old pavement with new paving resulting in brand new streets.
“We’ve heard from numerous businesses and property owners who said they are enjoying the new roads that resulted from the sewer work. It’s further proof of the many benefits our community will realize from this project,” HDWD General Manager Ed Muzik said.
HDWD has secured funding from the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, the State Revolving Fund and other sources to help keep customers’ share of the project cost as low as possible.
The collection system is scheduled to be completed this fall. Private connections to the system will begin in October 2019 after the facility is complete. Two more phases of development and funding will take place in the coming years.
