Professor David Jenkins has left a distinguished and influential legacy in education, research, and scientific advances in the water sector. His hallmark was to visit water resource recovery facilities to train operators, discuss operations, troubleshoot problems, and provide practical solutions.

Throughout his nearly 60-year career, he actively engaged operators both as Professor and later as Professor Emeritus at the University of California, Berkeley. Professor Jenkins had a lasting effect on the careers of many operators and their facilities.

Dr. Jenkins has been widely recognized with global honors, including induction into the National Academy of Engineering, Ardern and Lockett Award, Berkeley Citation, and many more. Dr. Jenkins will be remembered forever for his vital contributions.

About the Scholarship

WEF logo

The Professor David Jenkins Operator Scholarship is being established in honor of his contributions and legacy to the wastewater operator community.

This scholarship will provide up to $10,000 to a wastewater operator to pursue a college education to further their career in the water sector.

The recipient must be currently employed at a water resource recovery facility as an operator. The scholarship is for education-related expenses such as tuition, books, and professional activities.

The scholarship may not be used for stipends or wages. The Water Environment Federation (WEF) is building an endowment that will generate the annual funds to offer the scholarship each year in perpetuity.

WEF will constitute a selection committee, develop criteria, and administer the scholarship each year.

Why Donate?

The water sector needs talented people to join and participate in our critical work. Recruiting, retaining, training, and motivating a talented and diverse workforce is one of the most important challenges facing today’s water and wastewater utilities.

Your donation will directly impact WEF’s ability to support operator education and career development and contribute to a workforce that preserves our precious water infrastructure assets and provides clean and safe water for our communities.
