Devin Valdiva

Wastewater Systems Operator
Los Osos Water Recycling Facility
Certs held: SWRCB Wastewater Operator

Takeover on Instagram Oct. 9-10

I’ve been in the water industry since 2015 when I began working as an Operator-in-Training (OIT) at the San Luis Obispo Water Resource Recovery Facility.

At the time, I had no idea how many amazing things I’d be a part of. After completing approximately 1,000 hours as an unpaid intern, I was hired bythe County of San Luis Obispo. Today, I have the privilege of working at the brand new Los Osos Water Recycling Facility.

The Los Osos plant is the headquarters for all of the County’s wastewater operations. This is a tremendous opportunity for me to learn and grow not only at a young and modern facility but also by working within its collection system. We also operate two neighboring communities’ pond systems and their collections systems. I was hired full time January 1, 2018.

I truly believe in what we do. I’m proud to work in this industry and am always looking at different ways to inspire and collaborate with those in our community. I take pride in illustrating that we don’t just shovel you know what all day but instead have multiple layers of skills, awareness, and dedication to reclaim and reuse water.

That’s a really powerful concept and I’m proud to be in the position I’m in.

I work at the Los Osos Water Recycling Facility. Sure, we are a “wastewater treatment plant” but water isn’t waste. Through education and outreach we can help change the stigma of how the communities we serve sees and values the work we do.

I’m really excited about this opportunity to show off our beautiful facilities as well as some of the daily (and unexpected) operations we do.
