Hello, this is the winter quarterly report for the 2019 CWEA-MBS Year

I want wish you all Happy Holidays from your Board of the Monterey Bay Section of the CWEA. This past year has seen some challenges and while we push through the challenges, we also had some good training and dinner events. I want to thank the MBS Board and Committee Leaders for helping this past year.

I would like to highlight some of this year’s events and achievements:

  • 65th Annual Awards Banquet, February 8th, 2019
  • Annual Conference 19 in Palm Springs, April 9-12, 2019
  • Amanda Bird (City of Santa Cruz), current Past President, inducted into the 5S Society
  • Barry Blevins (CAWD), Winner of the CWEA Collections Person of the Year in California
  • Garon Goularte (Monterey One Water), WInner of the CWEA Operator of the Year in California
  • South County Regional Wastewater Authority, Winner of Plant of the Year-Medium in California
  • Collections System Workshop, August 29th, 2019

  • Dinner Training “It’s Raining, It’s Pouring, Are My Sewers Overflowing?” on November 6th, 2019

Looking ahead to next year your Board has been busy planning training events, dinner meetings and I would love to bring back the MBS golf tournament (please reach out to me via email if you would like to help with that).

There are several training events not put on by MBS but are still local trainings. Please click HERE (CSRMA Training Calendar) for links.

For the laboratory personnel in our section: see links below for training materials regarding ELAP inspections for laboratories, TNI compliance and statistics on most common violations.

For the Enviornmental Compliance personnel in our section, click HERE for EPA Pretreatment 101 Training. USEPA trainings usually cover such critical items as developing and implementing Local Limits, permitting dischargers, calculating and implementing Maximum Allowable Headworks Loadings (MAHLs) and Maximum Allowable Industrial Loadings (MAILs), and pollution prevention strategies and tactics.

The final event of the 2019 CWEA-MBS Program Year is in February, giving us all plenty of time to enjoy the holidays.

On February 7th, 2020 we will have the 66th Annual Awards Banquet. Look for the email flyer announcement.

At the banquet we will announce the Annual Award Winners for our Local Section, these winners will go on to the state level competition.

There will also be the swearing-in ceremony for the 2020 Monterey Bay Section Board of Directors.

Upcoming Meetings
The next Board meeting is set for January 8th at 11:30 at the Water Resource Center in Watsonville (City of Watsonville’s Wastewater Treatment Facility).

Feel free to join us.  You can either attend in person or access remotely via your computer.  We utilize the Zoom Meeting platform to enable all our directors (and members) to join in from your various facilities.  If you are interested in attending in person or remotely let me know via email.

The board is rotating our monthly meetings throughout the section, if your facility is interested in hosting one of these meetings let us know!  Thank you to Monterey One Water, the City of Santa Cruz Wastewater Treatment Facility, the City of Watsonville Wastewater Treatment Facility and Pebble Beach Community Services District for generously hosting our meetings this year.

Check out our website at mbs.cwea.org.  It includes Board of Director contact information, meeting minutes and agendas, section by-laws, award application information, description of our section’s geography and the various facilities in our area, past and present event flyers.

We have launched a new Sponsorship Program and are actively seeking out interested vendors to assist MBS in providing the best training programs and events possible (great door prizes too).  Click here to access our sponsorship flyer and feel free to share with your facility’s vendors.  Help us help you.

Thanks,

Daryl Lauer
