Select Society of Sanitary Sludge Shovelers  (5S Society) is an esteemed group of people in the wastewater field and I feel very proud to be part of it. Every CWEA event I walk into; I make sure I have shovel with me and is well displayed. It gives me a sense of belonging and confidence. It is very common at the CWEA events when I get asked about the shovel in a way that it feels like it is some sort of “prize” or “award”, but to me, it is an honor, a recognition for the volunteer work I have done for CWEA over a decade. I encourage every volunteer who meets the 5S criteria to earn a shovel.  In my mind, every dedicated volunteer should have a shovel. The good news is, it is very easy to earn after you have put in the hard work of volunteering.
