“Last year, Central San renovated or replaced over 3.5 miles of 6– to 10–inch sewers in streets and easements throughout the service area. Central San’s Collection System Operations Division (CSO) provides CCTV video and maintenance data of sewers to the Engineering Department to assist them in determining which sewer lines are chosen for renovation or replacement each year. CSO staff meets monthly with Capital Project engineers to review and prioritize repairs needed in the collection system sewer, which should be included in upcoming renovation projects.”
Central San is currently undertaking several neighborhood upgrade projects in its service area, including replacing approximately 1.8 miles of sewers in the Happy Valley, Deer Hill, Lafayette Hills, downtown, and trails neighborhoods of Lafayette. Completion is expected by November 2025.
Additionally, the replacement of another 1.8 miles of sewers in a Pleasant Hill neighborhood is in progress, with completion anticipated in November 2025.
The Buchanan Lift Station abandonment and sewer project will replace one mile of sewer lines while decommissioning two aging pumping stations, including a sewer main crossing at Buchanan Field Airport. The expected completion is December 2025.
The District is also replacing or retrofitting three pumping stations in the city of Martinez, with completion expected in December 2025.
The District’s Safety Program establishes employee participation as the foundation of its success. The Collection System Safety Team routinely meets to discuss leading and lagging safety indicators, such as accidents, hazardous conditions, inspection reports, training needs, and recognition of safe workers. This bottom-up approach has dramatically reduced the frequency and severity of injuries and vehicle accidents.
