CWEA Speaker Assistance: You Can Do It, We’re Here to Help

Considering applying to speak at a CWEA event? We’ve got the resources.
By CWEA Staff, Career Stories

The CWEA Board and Annual Conference Committee are excited to see the knowledge and skills you have to share with the wider wastewater community as a presenter at one of our upcoming conferences.

We know speaking at a conference can be intimidating. CWEA is here to support and empower you in pursuing your career goals. It’s one of our missions and one of the benefits of membership.

You have nothing to lose and will only gain experience and confidence by speaking at a conference. CWEA volunteer leaders and staff are here to help you every step of the way.

Did you know?

  • Many wastewater leaders made their first presentation at a CWEA conference or meeting. It’s where great things in your career get started.
  • If you hold CWEA certification(s), you get double the amount of contact hours as a presenter.
  • If you need a presentation coach, many experienced presenters are willing to help you and may even join you in co-presenting to support you. Start by asking around work for a presentation expert or reach out to us (see below).
  • CWEA has a wealth of speaker resources and training classes to help you get prepared and have a successful presentation.
  • Think only engineers present at AC, right? No way. AC attendees love to hear from operators and your knowledge and experience are invaluable.
    • At the 2023 AC in San Diego, 53% of speakers were from a practice area other than engineering. Engineers know a lot but not everything. We need the knowledge and experience from the frontline as well.

AC24 Speaker FAQ

What is the format of the technical sessions?

The length of your session, including activity/discussion time, should be 50 minutes and will qualify for one (1) CWEA contact hour in a specific practice area, depending on the topic. If you are hard pressed to fill the 50 minutes, consider including other speakers in your presentation. Only 50-minute proposals will be accepted.

NEW this year – CWEA is also accepting proposals for full day workshops during this call for proposals.

Proposals submitted by the due date will become the property of the CWEA AC24 Education Program Committee and will not be returned. Proprietary or confidential information included in proposals must be conspicuously stated.

What selection criteria does the AC24 Education Committee use to choose speakers?

The Education Committee will consider the educational value of each proposal, the expertise of the speakers, the speaker’s ability to engage an audience, and the speaker’s past conference evaluation results (if any).

Preferred proposals include one or more of the following elements:

  • Presentation co-presented between an experienced presenter and first-time presenter
  • Presentation co-presented between different disciplines (i.e., engineer and operations & maintenance)
  • Inclusion of different perspectives; for example, a vendor presentation that includes a public agency speaker
  • Information that has not been presented at a previous Annual Conference
  • Clear and practical takeaways for attendees
  • Topic with wide appeal to multiple audiences or to an individual practice area

What are the AC24 speaker policies?

CWEA is a not-for-profit association. To keep registration costs affordable, CWEA is unable to reimburse speaker travel expenses or pay honorariums. Speakers can register/pay to attend for one day or the full conference at a slightly discounted rate.

The success of our conference depends on the efforts of CWEA volunteers. Your interest and commitment as a speaker are greatly appreciated. If the proposal is accepted by the Education Program Committee, speakers will be required to sign a CWEA speaker agreement and complete tasks in the Cadmium platform this fall.
