Congratulations to the University of California, Riverside teams for their outstanding performance at this year’s CWEA Student Design Competition, held virtually on May 24.
One team took first place in the Water Environment category with a rigorous remediation plan for a contaminated military fuel site—aimed at transforming it into a safe, livable community space. Their innovative approach earned them a spot at WEFTEC 2025 in Chicago this fall! Congrats Aiden, Theresa, Anindith, Chris, Hannah, and Xuanyu!
UCR’s second team will also represent California in the new CircularWaterEconomy category, debuting this year at WEFTEC. Their project tackled volatile organic compound (VOC) and diesel contamination at a former aerospace site, using air sparging and soil vapor extraction to restore the land for safe future use. Congrats Helen, Lori, Alyssa, Melan, and Alexandria!
Huge thanks to our volunteer judges and committee (Rich ten Bosch, Valerie Ratto, P.E., Phil Ackman, Lanaya Voelz Alexander, Hashnat Badsha, PhD, Guy Yager, April Grahn, EIT, Shravani Ravadagundhi) for donating their time to the competition and helping us advance these future water leaders.
Let’s hear it for these remarkable students and the faculty supporting them—we’re proud to have UCR representing California on the national stage!
