Central San
Central San collects and cleans about 35 million gallons of wastewater every day. However, much of this collection process occurs underground, making it invisible to the public. We created the Go With the Flow Map and Bicycle Tour program to help our customers learn more about the “invisible” wastewater system that protects our health and environment.
For 21 miles, the Iron Horse Regional Trail follows one of Central San’s sewer lines, from San Ramon to our treatment plant in Martinez. Through the interactive story map and guided bike tours, people of all ages can explore the trail and the wastewater infrastructure along the way. They can walk, bike, or run the path of wastewater from their home, school, or office—all the way to our treatment plant. The program provides an educational and engaging way for people to discover what’s happening beneath their feet/wheels.
