Chemicals called PFAS have been in the headlines lately: These emerging contaminants are the focus of a major Hollywood movie, a Congressional task force, and considerable public concern.
Sometimes called “forever chemicals” because of their extreme persistence, PFAS enter wastewater from industrial sources and consumer products and are poorly removed by traditional treatment trains. As a result, they are present in treatment plant effluent and biosolids.
This presentation provided an overview of PFAS and their relevance to the clean water industry. Topics will include why and how PFAS are used by industry, human exposure and environmental concerns, analytical techniques, the regulatory landscape, and possibilities for source control.

Dr. Bruton leads the Institute’s research and policy work on highly fluorinated chemicals (PFAS). He received his Ph.D. in environmental engineering at UC Berkeley, where his research focused on cleanup of chemical contaminants, including PFAS, in soil and groundwater. He holds B.S. and M.S.E. degrees in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Iowa State University, and Arizona State University, respectively.
