The Pure Water San Diego Program took a major step forward on Thursday, Nov. 15 when the City Council voted to proceed with construction of the Phase 1 – North City Projects. This decision authorizes Mayor Faulconer to execute construction contracts to the lowest responsible and reliable bidders for the Phase 1 – North City Projects. The approval streamlines the process for bid and award of contracts, along with the start of construction for Phase 1 in 2019.
Phase 1 of the Program includes construction of the North City Pure Water Facility, which will produce 30 million gallons per day (mgd) of purified water, new pump stations and pipelines, and upgrades to existing facilities. The new North City Pure Water Facility will be constructed on a city-owned parcel east of Interstate 805 and north of Eastgate Mall – across from the existing North City Water Reclamation Plant. The purified water produced there will be delivered to Miramar Reservoir and blend with the City’s imported and local water sources before being treated again at the Miramar Drinking Water Treatment Plant and distributed to customers. Combined, these projects will deliver 30 mgd of a safe, reliable and sustainable water supply to San Diegans starting in 2023. Pure Water San Diego will be the first reservoir augmentation project in the State of California, which has been made possible by the City’s research, demonstration facility, modeling and regulatory efforts to help develop statewide regulations.
This action officially signals the move of Pure Water San Diego from design to construction. This is a decade’s long effort led by dedicated and committed city leaders, staff, industry experts, and stakeholders to bring a new water supply source to the City of San Diego.
