The 2020 Annual Conference wrapped up on October 20th with a fun and interactive closing session. CWEA members did it. You did it. Organizing our first ever virtual conference and digital expo!

We are so proud of what CWEA members and conference planners have achieved. The conference brought together 977 wastewater professionals from across the state. They demonstrated their commitment to clean water by innovating, adapting, moving forward and showing up for CWEA’s Virtual Conference & Expo. There were 47 different presentations, 4 brown bag networking lunches and 176 speakers where attendees picked up leadership and technical skills, learned about hot topics and heard from wastewater’s leaders.

In the digital expo members connected with exhibitors and learned about new technologies.

Conference organizers handed out 47 door prizes to members during various AC20 events.

Attendees were able to network with fellow attendees by networking virtually via the conference app and enjoiy fun and creative networking events such as the Icebreaker Vacations, the SYP Trivia Contest, the SYP Scavenger Hunt and the Brownbag Networking Luncheons. There were even opportunities to meet with the presenters for additional conversations and networking.

For all AC20 attendees – watch your mailbox for the cool, free conference gifts arriving soon. The free tote bag is sponsored by STANTEC and the face mask is sponsored by CAROLLO. The free gifts are our thanks for contributing to the sucess of the first-ever virtual CWEA conference.

Opening General Session: Fredi Lajvardi, a nationally recognized STEM educator, shared his inspiring story of mentoring a high school engineering club in Phoenix when he led his team of disadvantaged teenagers in a university-level underwater robotics competition to defeat the leading schools, including top-ranked MIT. Their story inspired the acclaimed documentary Underwater Dreams and was also adapted into the major motion picture, Spare Parts. To say Fredi had us captivated is an understatement, many of us were in tears. He illustrated the need to embrace diversity and invest in people to help others realize their potential. Thank you LEE + RO for sponsoring opening session!

Women Impacting Water returned for a Brownbag Lunch Session with Megan Yoo Schneider, Municipal Water District of Orange County and Eleanor Allan, Water For People. Both women provided their inspiring unique stories of how they came into their leadership roles. So many helpful tips on finding your passion, finding and being a mentor and work/life balance. Thank you CDM Smith and Woodard & Curran for sponsoring the Women Impacting Water event.

During the AC20 PFSAS Summit we heard from great speakers like Arlene Blum, Executive Director of the Green Science Policy Institute who spoke passionately about her research on PFAS, the “forever chemical” in clothing, cookware, cosmetics, sunscreen, upholstery, carpet, and pizza boxes. Thank you DUDEK for sponsoring this session.

The Student and Young Professionals Committee hosted a very special brownbag lunch session promoting recruitment of a diverse young workforce into the water and wastewater industry. Career Pathways in Water/Wastewater featured a cohort of high school and college-age interns (students) from throughout California that did an amazing job presenting on careers in the industry, as well as a panel of professionals discussing their own “career story.”

New 5S Shovelers Honored at AC20

We celebrated 5S winners and the future generation of wastewater professionals by collecting over $1,000 for Kirt Brooks donated via the virtual buckets, and over $5,000 from Local Sections.
