It’s been a big year for the California Water Environment Association (CWEA) – one filled with progress, impact, and powerful momentum. As we reflect on the milestones of the past year, it’s clear that CWEA is not only growing but also shaping the future of the water profession in California.

A New Strategic Vision

This year, CWEA finalized a new three-year strategic plan, which officially launched at the fourth annual Leadership Summit in Tiburon in June. The plan charts an ambitious course with three core goals:

  • Membership Growth – Expanding our diverse member base, strengthening agency outreach, and building meaningful relationships with educators and emerging professionals.
  • Training and Professional Development – Delivering tailored, accessible programs that meet members wherever they are in their career journey, from hands-on training to online learning through OWEN (the Online Wastewater Education Network).
  • Engagement and Belonging – Deepening collaboration across our volunteer network and local sections, while creating new opportunities for members to connect, lead, and thrive.
Certification Milestones

Certification remains at the heart of CWEA’s mission, and we’ve had a record-breaking year. Over 2,600 certification applications were processed – the highest number in CWEA history. This record underscores the value professionals place on advancing their careers and highlights the credibility of CWEA’s programs.

A major milestone came in July with the launch of the updated Collection System Maintenance (CSM) exams, developed in partnership with dedicated volunteers and CWEA’s certification staff. Work is already underway on the next major update, the Mechanical Technologist exams, released July 1, 2026.

Training the Next Generation

CWEA hit the road with Collection System Fundamentals workshops across the state, offering practical, hands-on training for new wastewater professionals. Feedback from participants has been overwhelmingly positive, reinforcing CWEA’s commitment to building essential skills for the next generation. With more workshops planned in the coming year, these sessions are becoming a cornerstone of CWEA’s educational offerings.

OWEN Expands its Reach

The Online Wastewater Education Network (OWEN) continues to grow as CWEA’s premier hub for on-demand learning. With over 300 online classes, OWEN makes training accessible to water professionals anytime, anywhere.

In 2025, CWEA introduced new training bundles on high-demand topics including Advanced Waster Treatment (AWT), Collection System Maintenance Grade 1, Microscopic Lab Analysis, and Wastewater 101. These bundles are designed to bridge the gap between certification preparation and practical, on-the-job knowledge. Digital sessions from AC25 are also available online, expanding access to hot topics traditionally only available to in-person attendees, growing OWEN’s library even further.

Strengthening Community

Beyond training and certification, CWEA continues to cultivate connection and belonging. The Question of the Month campaign on the CWEA Community platform has sparked statewide conversations, giving members a fun and engaging way to share ideas and connect.

Meanwhile, the CWEA Mentoring Program, now in its third year, has become a cornerstone for members seeking guidance, growth, and professional connection. Feedback from both mentors and mentees continues to be overwhelmingly positive, underscoring the program’s impact on careers and community.

Looking Ahead

These milestones are more than achievements – they represent momentum. With a bold strategic plan in place and a community that continues to show up, lead, and push the profession forward, CWEA is building a stronger, more connected future for California’s water professionals.

To every member, volunteer, and partner: thank you. Your commitment and passion are the heart of CWEA. Together, we are riding the waves of change with strength, purpose, and vision.
