The City of San Bernardino’s wastewater collection system includes 472.86 miles of sewer pipelines within a 55-square-mile area, conveying an average of 21 million gallons per day. Pipe sizes range from 6 to 54 inches. The system also includes 15 pumping plants and one mile of force mains, receiving additional flow from the East Valley Water District and the City of Loma Linda. All wastewater is treated at the Dorothy Chandler Wastewater Treatment Facility.

Operational responsibility was transferred to the San Bernardino Municipal Water Department (SBMWD) in 2017. The Collections System Section maintains the pipelines, while the Mechanical and Electrical Sections manage the pumping plants. SBMWD complies with state-mandated Wastewater Discharge Requirements and maintains a Sanitary Sewer Management Plan (SSMP). The Collections Systems Superintendent serves as the Legally Responsible Official.

Collections staff work in two-person crews using combination sewer cleaners, with maintenance tracked through Field Mapplet, a GIS-based CMMS.
