Central Contra Costa Sanitary District (Central San) recently tested a nutrient treatment technology that has the potential to revolutionize the wastewater industry as agencies navigate costly nutrient management solutions. Membrane Aerated Biofilm Reactor (MABR) was piloted at their wastewater treatment plant earlier this year to assess whether it could effectively reduce pollutant loads at a lower cost. The results of the research pilot proved that MABR technology can manage nutrients in a cost-effective manner that has the potential to minimize the extent of capital upgrades, while improving the environment and public health.
