Calera Creek Water Recycling Plant

First Place
 Santa Clara Valley Section

The Calera Creek Water Recycling Plant is a Class IV Plant, treating 4 Million Gallons of sewage per Day —up to 20 MGD during storm events. The Sequencing Batch Reactors are innovative, combining aeration and clarification, which are separate at most older plants.

This plant is one of the first fully automated plants in the San Francisco Bay Area designed for nutrient removal. This is also one of the first Plants in California to use Autothermal Thermophilic Aerobic Digesters to generate Class A Biosolids.

This Plant helped pioneer the use of Ultraviolet Disinfection for wastewater effluent in California. UV allows release of recycled water into wetlands because residual chlorine was not allowed in the permitting process. The Calera Creek is an engineered wetland and home to endangered species —San Francisco Garter Snake and the California Red Legged Frog. The view of the Pacific Ocean from the Plant is Breathtaking.
