Networking that Matters Most

The old adage "It's not what you know, it's who you know" is truer than ever in today's organizations. But how do you know whom to know? Here are three types of networks it pays to have:

  • Personal support. Form relationships with people who help you get back on track during a bad day. These may be friends or colleagues with whom you can just be yourself.

  • Purpose. Include in your network bosses and customers who validate your work, and family members and other stakeholders who remind you that your work has a broader meaning.

  • Work/life balance. Seek out people who will hold you accountable for activities that improve your physical health, mental engagement, or spiritual well-being.

Find out more in "Managing Yourself: A Smarter Way to Network" which appeared in the July 2011 HBR (free registration required).

And the Winner Is...Someone you Know

P3S Facility of the Year Awards
The CWEA Pretreatment, Pollution Prevention, and Stormwater Committee is in the process of soliciting nominations for the 2011 Facility of the Year Awards. These awards recognize industrial user sites for their outstanding and innovative solutions in multimedia waste management. Nominations are due November 18.

CWEA State Awards
2011 CWEA awards forms are available on the web at www.cwea.org/awards. Please make sure to use these forms as templates for your CWEA local section awards. This standard process will uphold the integrity and consistency of the program. Please forward comments and concerns to ldvorak@cwea.org so we can continue to streamline and improve the clean water awards.

Dashboards...Measuring our Progress

Check out the FY11-12 Strategy Map Metrics Dashboard, which includes preliminary (unaudited) financials, to see how the Association advanced its mission through key project milestones. By keeping an eagle eye on expenditures and working to maintain revenue streams throughout fiscal year 10-11, we were able to come out more than $200K better than budget, without tapping reserves as initially planned. That balance will go into reserves for emergencies, unexpected opportunities or infrastructure investments such as the upcoming replacement of our Association Management Software. It’s too early to know how this year will turn out, but early indicators are good. In this issue, you get two dashboards for the price of one: here’s the first look at our progress in the new fiscal year.

Free Training: The Lazy Leader's Guide to Outrageous Results

CWEA volunteers know that volunteering does more than lend CWEA a helping hand. You get a chance to develop your leadership and delegation skills. And, it’s a fun way to grow your career. One way is by taking part in CWEA’s free leadership development training.

Join us November 16 in Sacramento for our free Annual Leadership Training to learn how to lead so others want to get involved. Turn “I don’t have time” into “I can’t wait to volunteer.” Leadership Strategist Cynthia D’Amour will teach us how to delegate for outrageous results.

The flyer has all the details
and you can register with Victoria…for free…right now. The first 50 registrants receive a free copy of Cynthia’s book “The Lazy Leader’s Guide to Outrageous Results.” RSVPs needed by October 20th.

Current and prospective CWEA leaders are welcome. The more leaders, the more outrageous our results.

Upcoming Regional Committee Meetings

The roll-out of the “straw design” for revitalizing the Northern and Southern Regional Committees has been moving forward, with considerable positive feedback from participants. Increased Board participation in Regional Committee meetings is one way that these committees are already bringing more value to local section leaders. Local section presidents and VPs, be sure to put your upcoming NRC or SRC meeting on your calendar, and bring ideas for more ways the regional committees can serve you.

The next Southern Regional Committee meeting will include a free training on Leadership: Time Management (Life Management) by Mr. Varouj Abkian, Technical Services Assistant Director of the City of Los Angeles. Join us from 10-3 on November 3 at the Hyperion Treatment Plant in Playa Del Rey. See the flyer for more detail.

The next Northern Regional Committee meeting will be from 10-2 on December 8 at the CWEA Office in Oakland. Let Rick know if you have discussion ideas for the agenda.
