Help Promote NRTC

The Northern Regional Training Conference 2013 is right around the corner. We’d love your help getting the word out about this event. Please help us by promoting NRTC at your next local section and committee events. Here’s a NRTC 2013 poster that you can use to show your members and colleagues – post it in your workplace’s break room or other high traffic area. As past attendees know, NRTC 2013 is a great way to improve your professional knowledge, find solutions to challenges within your organization, network with fellow water and wastewater professionals, gain certification hours and network with colleagues—all in one place! This conference is also a cost effective way to build your skills and your agency’s capabilities. This is one conference you will want to let all of your co-workers know about.

Mechanical Technologist Volunteer Opportunity

We're looking for certified volunteers to validate the Mechanical Technologist vocation. Over the last 4 years CWEA has teamed up with Collection System Maintenance professionals, Environmental Compliance experts and Electrical/Instrumentation specialists to ensure our certification tests remain valid and relevant. Now it’s time for wastewater Mechanical Technologist experts to step up to the same challenge. If you have been waiting for the opportunity to share your professional experience, technical expertise and be a part of the decision making process of a valuable program, join us in revalidating the Mechanical Technologist certification tests. Learn more about this opportunity by contacting Certification Executive Committee Vice-Chair, Roy Reynolds of Orange County Sanitation District or Vivien Malig, CWEA Certification Manager. Volunteer involvement will be from October 2013 to January 2014. Join us by applying now or forwarding this opportunity to a colleague!

President Christoph Dobson Seeks CWEA Board Nominations

"The task of leadership is not to put greatness into humanity, but to elicit it, for the greatness is already there.” --John Buchan.

Serving on CWEA’s Board not only allows you to give back to the profession that we care so much about but also provides you with an outstanding leadership and professional development opportunity…so nominate your next leader by January 1 (or ask someone to nominate you) for your CWEA State Board.

We are seeking the following candidates:

  • Vice President from the South (will be President in third year of four-year term);
  • Director at-large from the North (three-year term);
  • Director at-large from the South (serves as CWEA Treasurer in third year of three-year term);
  • Water Environment Federation (WEF) Delegate Director from the South (three-year term, starting in October 2014; however, attendance at Board meetings starts immediately after April 2014 elections).

Copyright for Online Images

A picture says a thousand words...make sure it doesn't cost a thousand bucks. Copyright is a federal US law that protects original authorship, including images. The photographer doesn't need to do anything special to retain his/her rights -- no need to file special paperwork as is the case for trademarks and patents. So when in doubt, assume that picture you found on a quick Google image search is subject to copyright and don't use it without the appropriate permission.

Here are a few places to find free or inexpensive images. Make sure to check the license type to determine any possible use restictions.

Nametags Icebreaker

Prepare nametags for each person and put them in a box. As people walk into the room, each person picks a nametag (not their own). When everyone is present, participants are told to find the person whose nametag they drew and introduce themselves and say a few interesting things about them. When everyone has their own nametag, they introduce the person whose nametag they were initially given. This helps people get to know and remember each other.
