Certification Preparation Taskforce Presents: Training the Trainer 2012
Tuesday, April 17 from 8:30-4:30
Earn 8.4 Contact Hours
Free

At AC11, the Certification Prep Task Force held another successful Pre-Conference Workshop to Train the Trainers in the techniques of presenting training material to accommodate the different learning styles of adults as they prepare for Certification Testing. Based on the results and feedback of this and previous workshops, the Task Force has re-crafted its training materials to hold a new and improved Train the Trainer Pre-Conference Workshop at AC12.

The Task Force needs help from Local Sections to recruit members to build up CWEA's pools of moderators. If you hold certification in Grades II, III, or IV of your vocation, now is your chance to learn how to help your fellow wastewater professionals earn their certification through CWEA’s Technical Certification Program. You will find out what VARK is, what your own VARK style is, and how you can channel your VARKism to best serve others. In addition, you will gain other valuable tools that will help you become a trainer capable of effectively assisting others who are striving to obtain CWEA certification in their vocation.

This is a free pre-conference session, with a great lunch included. Upon completion of this training you’ll receive contact
hours. PLUS, your commitment to become a trainer will allow you access to standardized training material relevant to your vocation from the State’s finest trainers.

Speakers: Joanna De Sa, City of San José; Gina Cloutier, Victor Valley Wastewater Reclamation Authority; Marjorie Boone, ehs International Inc.; and Sam Rose, South Placer Municipal Utility District

WATER'S WORTH IT

WATER’S WORTH IT is a new messaging campaign from the Water Environment Federation (WEF) that answers the question about how our actions, attitudes, and the things we most value are so closely connected with water.

The goal of the campaign is to raise awareness about the value and importance of water, water-related issues, and the work that water professionals do every day to provide these vital services.

Designed to be versatile and easy to use, the tagline, WATER’S WORTH IT, can be used on its own, in support of an existing program or brand, or coupled with a simple keyword to alter its impact and reach. For example, “My Effort. WATER’S WORTH IT” evokes a personal responsibility while “Your Effort” serves as a call to action and “Our Effort” represents a shared commitment to sustainable water management.

Easily customized to your needs, the campaign can help you reach any audience, in any location, about any issue. Get involved at http://www.waters-worth-it.org/.

Local Section and Committees Encouraged to Have an Info Table At AC12

CWEA will be hosting its Annual Conference at the Sacramento Convention Center from April 17-20, 2012.  The conference planning committee would like to invite you to have an information table at our conference free of charge.  This annual event showcases the best and brightest of California in the wastewater and water industry, offers networking opportunities for busy professionals, and provides continuing education for everyone from front-line operations and maintenance workers to engineering staff and managers.  We anticipate over 1,000 attendees and participants from public agencies, consultants, manufacturers and vendors supporting the California water and wastewater industry. Please see the invitation letter and registration form for additional information.

Contribute to the Kirt Brooks Scholarship Fund

The CWEA Scholarship Committee awarded $13,200 to 3 undergraduate and 3 graduate students for the next school year. Congratulations to these amazing students and thank you to all the students who applied. It’s very inspiring to read about the career goals of these future leaders.  The selected students will be invited to attend the Annual Conference in Sacramento.

Come to the awards lunch at AC12 to meet some of the scholarship winners in person and to see CWEA Local Sections present their annual donations. Additionally, contributions will be collected at AC by this year's 5S - Select Society of Sanitary Sludge Shovelers - inductees. You can help more students receive the funding they need to go into the water environment field.

With recent budget cuts to higher education, many students are struggling to start or continue their college studies. CWEA can help! We are interested in growing the Kirt Brooks Memorial Water Environment Scholarship Fund to reach even more students and help them realize their potential in water environment careers. Do you want to encourage young people to enter this dynamic, fulfilling community of professionals? Do you have great ideas for fundraising? Do you have a pile of money sitting around wondering what good use you can put it to? Let’s talk! Contact scholarship@cwea.org.

Local Section and Committee Budgets Due April 30

Attached is the Committee Budget Template for the upcoming fiscal year FY12-13.  If your committee does not plan to spend more than $500 for FY 12-13 (July  2012 – June 2013), you do not need to complete. Otherwise, complete the attached template with as much detail as possible and return it to me no later than April 30th to be considered for approval.

The new local section template introduced last year is mandatory for FY 12-13. Local sections using this tool have found it makes reporting easier, and helps the treasurers track revenues and expenses.

If you have any questions, please contact Renu Pal, rpal@cwea.org or Kevin Rogers, krogers@cwea.org.

Regional Committee Meetings

The roll-out of the “straw design” for revitalizing the Northern and Southern Regional Committees (NRC and SRC) has been moving forward, with considerable positive feedback from participants. Increased CWEA State Board participation in Regional Committee meetings is one way that these committees are already bringing more value to local section leaders. CWEA Local Section Presidents and VPs, be sure to attend the upcoming NRC, SRC and Joint. Regional Committee meetings at AC12, and bring ideas for more ways the regional committees can serve you!

The committees will meet separately from 1:30 - 3:00 on April 18 and then join to meet together with leaders from across the state from 3:00 - 4:30. Contact Barbara Langley blangley@simivalley.org and Rick Staggs Rick.Staggs@fresno.gov.
