Local Section Participation Surging

From CWEA President Carrie Mattingly

Something exciting is happening in our association – and it's starting in the smaller towns and agencies in the Northern Local Sections. High levels of attendance at the awards and installation banquets was surprising the local section leaders – they were reporting to have doubled the attendance from previous years. This was consistent in all but one local section banquet I attended in the North.

What does this mean? It tells me a few things:

1. The local section leaders are hitting those hot buttons needed to get people to attend;
2. The economy is shifting in a positive direction;
3. CWEA’s awards program is meaningful, especially when the recognition it provides might not be coming from anyplace else. I was thrilled to see the number of elected officials and general managers that attended the banquets; and
4. People really like door prizes.

Talking with the officers I installed up and down the state, with one exception where the section actually had a run-off vote for a position (which was totally awesome), local section leaders were concerned with succession planning, being recycled through the board, getting more people involved as officers, and attracting committed volunteers. I heard from folks that even though people seem to like to participate, they don’t necessarily want to do the ‘work’ or make the commitment to put together a training day, group event, or a banquet. Commitment is a challenge for the tiny agencies where only one or two people might work there and it’s tough for someone to get away from the plant.

There are tried and true solutions to these challenges. It’s rare to find someone who isn’t willing to spend some time supporting (or to allow time for others to support) something they believe in, enjoy, or receive benefit from. Each year free CWEA leadership workshops held at the annual conference and in the late fall hold a key to unlock your volunteer base. Attend if you can. You may have your own thoughts on these issues as a local section leader. Change is in the wind. Let’s start a conversation about the positive change happening in your local section. Your regional committee meeting is a fantastic venue for this very thing. Talk it up – you are doing great things as volunteers. Take some credit. Start some buzz about your success. You are making a difference!

New Feature on CWEA Event Calendar

We're pleased to announce that we've been able to make posting events on the CWEA calendar one step easier. Go to www.cwea.org/calendar and select the "Suggest an Event" tab. When the pop-up screen appears, simply add your event information. Select the category that best fits your event. In most cases, you'll choose the "local section events" category.

Check out www.cwea.org/calendar before scheduling your trainings to make sure that they aren't in conflict with other CWEA events. Make sure there are no committee meetings, board meetings, state events and such before scheduling a training event that could pull people from other sections. This will help all of us keep our event attendance up and ensure that training are spread out enough to meet our members' needs.

Regional Committee Meetings

The roll-out of the “straw design” for revitalizing the Northern and Southern Regional Committees (NRC and SRC) has continued moving forward, with considerable positive feedback from participants. Increased CWEA State Board participation in Regional Committee meetings is one way that these committees are already bringing more value to local section leaders. CWEA Local Section Presidents and VPs, be sure to attend the upcoming NRC, SRC and Joint Regional Committee meetings at AC13, and bring ideas for more ways the regional committees can serve you! The committees will meet separately from 1:30 - 2:30 on April 17 and then join to meet together with leaders from across the state from 2:30 - 4:00. Contact Barbara Langley and Steve Caswell.
